The Correlation Between Students’ Pronunciation and Self-Confidence on Speaking Ability of MTs Alwathoniyah Arjasa Sumenep
Abstract
This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ pronunciation and self-confidence on speaking ability. The problems were many unconfident students were always seen as difficult to speak English well because they had low grammar, intonation and pronunciation in their class. This research used quantitative research which correlation design. This research was conducted in MTs Al-Wathoniyah Arjasa Sumenep. The sample was selecting using total sampling which all the population became sample which consisted of 77 students. Collecting data method in this research was oral test and questionnaire. The finding of this research indicated that the score of students in MTs Al-Wathoniyah Arjasa Sumenep was very good in pronunciation with the mean score of students’ pronunciation was 84,01. The mean score of students’ self-confidence was 76,79. It showed that the students’ self-confidence was high. Meanwhile, the mean score of students’ speaking ability was 86,03. It showed that the students’ speaking ability was very good. Data analysis used normality, homogeneity, linearity, t-test and correlation test by using SPSS 21. The results were (0,590 > 0,05), (0,428, 0,279 > 0,05), (0,394 > 0,05), (0,000 < 0,05) and the analysis based on output of Pearson product moment in SPSS 21, r count < r table (0,069, 0,065, 0,086 < 0, 224) with the rate of 5% Alpha and the sig. 0,551, 0,574, 0,459 > 0,05. Thus, it can be concluded that there was no correlation between students’ pronunciation and self-confidence on speaking ability of MTs Al-Wathoniyah Arjasa Sumenep (Alternative Hypothesis is rejected and Null Hypothesis is accepted).
